Eighteen
years ago we coined the phrase "Have the time of your life
on the Day of the Dead!" Since then, hundreds of people have
done just that, many more than once. As we approach our 2008
visit to the magical southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, the excitement
and anticipation are greater than ever.
The Day of the Dead, November 2, is a national holiday in Mexico
and is promoted widely as an effort to preserve indigenous traditions
as well as to encourage tourism. Día
de los Muertos is also widely observed and celebrated throughout
the United States. Nowhere, however, in Mexico or in the United
States, is the celebration more important, more authentic, more
meaningful and moving, and more colorful than in Oaxaca. The many
years of experience of Tierra del Sol in Oaxaca gives you a unique
opportunity to share every aspect of the Día de los Muertos
with the marvelous people of Oaxaca and learn why it is a celebration
of life as well as a recognition and honoring of the dead.
What makes this program even more exceptional is that during your
week in Oaxaca, you will learn why this state is often described
as the "essence" of Mexico. the week includes visits to
some of the most impressive archeological sites in Mexico, to magnificent
Spanish colonial churches and other structures, to superb museums,
to fabulous indigenous markets, and to the workshops and studios
of some of the most talented artisans and painters in the country.
Your meals, emphasizing the famed traditional Oaxaca cuisine, will
be served in some of Oaxaca's finest restaurants.
The program is created and directed by historian Ward S. Albro,
director of Tierra del Sol, who has lectured widely in the United
States on the Day of the Dead and other topics and he has written
the text for a book of photographs entitled The Day of
the Dead; Día de los Muertos, available at your local
bookstrore or on the internet.
