Your Mexico Guide: Ward S. Albro

Tierra del Sol: Mexico Programs and Services was founded and is directed by historian Ward S. Albro. Albro has directed programs in Mexico and Central America for 20 years. A university professor for over 30 years, he began organizing and leading programs through Texas A&M University in Kingsville, where he also created and led that university's first office of international programs. When he took early retirement from Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1996, he organized Tierra del Sol. Albro was named professor emeritus in history at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1997 and recently was a visiting professor and holder of the O'Connor Chair at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He is currently lecturing at both the Texas A&M University, System Center, San Antonio, and at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

As a historian, Albro is the author of two books on the coming of the Mexican Revolution, a book on the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, and many articles on Mexico and Southwest Borderlands topics. He has lectured widely throughout both the United States and Mexico on topics in Mexican and Borderlands history, folk art, popular culture, and faculty development programs. He has taken groups of Texas educators for five week programs to Mexico once and Guatemala twice under the Fulbright-Hays program of the U.S. Department of Education. He has also received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Texas Council for the Humanities, and numerous other organizations.

Tierra del Sol's programs reflect the personal involvement of Ward Albro and his wife, Tot, at every stage. They admit they have had a love affair with Mexico for many decades, but it is not a jealous love -- they enjoy sharing it. Long ago they came to accept the truth of the old Mexican saying -- "Once the dust of Mexico settles on your heart, you cannot find peace in any other land."
